Welcome to the site of the Clerk of Superior and Juvenile Courts of Columbia County.

Our staff continually strives to provide Columbia County residents with the highest level of professional public service.

Columbia County was created from Richmond County on December 10th, 1790. Columbia is Georgia’s 12th county and from her original boundaries were formed parts of Warren and McDuffie counties. Shortly after its creation, Peter Crawford was commissioned the first Clerk of the Superior and Inferior Courts of Columbia County. Cobbham, Kiokee, and Appling have all served as the county seat. Currently the County Justice Center in Evans serves as the primary courthouse.

Court is still held at Appling’s courthouse—which is the oldest courthouse in Georgia still in use. Built in 1812, the Appling courthouse was extensively remodeled in 1856, further renovations were necessary in the late 1970s .

The Superior Court was established under the Constitution of 1798 and is the highest court in each circuit. It is a court of record which means that all records, documentation, and minutes filed in this office cannot be altered after filing.

The Clerk of Superior Court is an elected official, a constitutional officer of said court. The Superior Court Clerk’s Office is a vital entity for all branches of the judicial system.

Summoned for Jury Duty?  Watch the Video!

Every week thousands of prospective jurors assemble in hundreds of courthouses throughout the nation to participate in a civic duty and a right guaranteed by the sixth Amendment to the constitution – the provision of trial by a jury of peers. By serving on a jury, you have a direct hand in the administration of justice.

The law and court procedures of our state had as their origin the Common Law of England where the right to trial by jury existed since 1215. This right has been sacredly guarded and preserved by the institutions of our various states and by the Federal Constitution.

The jury is responsible for the correct determination of the facts which are in dispute in a given case. Errors of law may be corrected by the trial judge or appellate courts, but a jury’s error of fact may never be corrected. Thus, a juror’s duty is one of grave responsibility and importance.
